EUCC
European Union for Coastal Conservation. EUCC's mission is to promote coastal management that integrates biodiversity conservation with those forms of development that sustain the integrity of landscapes, the cultural heritage nd the social fabric of our coasts taking into account the effects of climate change. EUCC advocates best practice by developing coastal and marine policies, mobilising experts and stakeholders, providing advice and information, and implementing demonstration projects.

ICZM

Integrated Coastal Zone Management
A continuous process of administration the general aim of which is to put into practice sustainable development and conservation in coastal zones and to maintain their biodiversity. To this end, ICZM seeks, through more efficient management, to establish and maintain the best use and sustainable levels of development and activity (use) in the coastal zone, and, over time, to  improve the physical status of the coastal environment in accordance with certain commonly held and agreed norms. NGO
A non-governmental organisation, meaning an organisation which is not a public authority.

MAP
The Mediterranean Action Plan (MAP) strives to protect the environment and to foster development in the Mediterranean Basin. It was adopted in Barcelona, Spain in 1975 by 16 Mediterranean States and the EC, under the auspices of the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP). Its legal framework comprises the Barcelona Convention adopted in 1976 and revised in 1995, and six Protocols covering specific aspects of environmental protection.

METAP
Mediterranean Environment Technical Assistance Programme. Supported by the European Commission, the European Investment Bank (EIB), the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) and the World Bank, the Mediterranean Environmental Technical Assistance Program METAP) was established in 1990 to bring together the Mediterranean countries to cope with and reduce the effects of environmental degradation.

PAP/RAC
Priority Actions Programme/Regional Activity Centre stablished in 1978, is a key component of the Mediterranean Action Plan (MAP), itself part of the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP). Twenty Mediterranean countries as well as the European Union make up the MAP, and their common objective is the creation of a healthier Mediterranean environment, resting on the principle of ustainable development. One of six Regional Activity Centres within the MAP, the Centre has built up a global reputation due to its expertise in Integrated Coastal Area Management (ICAM). PAP/RAC is the people who work in the centre, as well as the large network of Mediterranean experts and institutions. Many know us better by the abbreviation than by the full name. We consider it an asset, since by such recognisability, not only in the Mediterranean, our work hitherto was acknowledged.

Rio Declaration
Short for: "Rio Declaration on environment and development". A set of 27 principles approved by all nations attending the UN Conference on Environment and Development, Rio de Janeiro, Brasil, 3-14 June 1992.

SMAP
Short and Medium-term Priority Environmental Action Programme (SMAP) is a framework programme of action for the protection of the mediterranean environment, within the context of the Euro-Mediterranean Partnership. It was adopted unanimously by the Euro-Mediterranean Ministerial Conference on the Environment, held in Helsinki on the 28 November 1997. The SMAP is intended to become the common basis for environmental purposes (as regards both policy orientation and funding) in the Mediterranean region.

stakeholder
Users who have particular intereest in a coastal area, such as oil and gas developers, fishermen, hotel owners, port developers, aquaculture farmers, environmental groups and local government authorities.

sustainable development
Meeting the needs of the the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs. (World Commission on Environment and Development)

system analysis
A systematic investigation of a real or planned system to determine the functions of the system and how they relate to each other and to any other system.

UNEP
The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), established in 1972, works to encourage sustainable development through sound environmental practices everywhere. Its activities cover a wide range of issues, from atmosphere and errestrial ecosystems, the promotion of environmental science and information, to an early warning and emergency response capacity to deal with environmental disasters and emergencies.
