The generic concept of Sustainable Development was
highlighted in "Our Common Future" (widely known
as The Brundtland Report) published in 1987.
Sustainability was defined as:
Meeting the needs of the present without
compromising the ability of the future generations to
meet their own needs (WCED, 1987:43).
This implies that Sustainable Development leaves future
generations with sufficient resources for quality of
life. Planning over long time and the involvement of
all people in development are essential.
