RESULTS OF 2003-2004 SMALL GRANTS COMPETITION
FOR RUSSIAN BIOSPHERE RESERVES
The small grants competition for Russian biosphere reserves in 2003-2004 was conducted with the support of the Institute for Sustainable Communities (ROLL Program), UNESCO office in Moscow, the Russian Committee on "The Man and the Biosphere" Program and the US Fish and Wildlife Service.
In the first round the following projects were rewarded:
Organization of biosphere areas and establishment of regional protected
areas' network in the transitional zone of Sayano-Shushenky reserve
- $ 7,500.
Establishment and development of transitional zones in biosphere reserve
Chernye Zemli - $ 6,945.
Biodiversity conservation in the Altai Republic following the example of
the transitional zone of Katunsky biosphere reserve (non-profit partnership
"Club of Katunsky reserve friends") - $ 7,500.
Development of transitional areas in Astrakhansky biosphere reserve;
a practical way of introducing the Seville Strategy principles - $ 7,500.
Establishment of ecological and educational advocacy centers (ecological
centers) on the basis of school forestry (Kerzhensky reserve) - $ 7,480.
In the second round grantswere awarded to the following projects:
Development of sustainable nature use pattern in the transitional zone
territory of Dalnevostochny Morskoy (Far East Marine) biosphere reserve
- $ 11,500.
Sustainable forest management in the transitional zone of biosphere reserve
Nizhegorodskoye Zavolshye (company APK Lesnoy) - $ 8,000.
Cooperation as the precondition for the sustainable development of the
area (national park Ugra) - $ 8,000.
Establishment of a system for protecting biosphere reserve territory from
steppe fires (biosphere reserve "Chernye Zemli") - $ 6,945.
