Appeal Address by the First Regional Session of the Global Biodiversity Forum for the countries of Eastern Europe to the Governments of Russia, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Turkmenistan and Mongolia The First Regional Session of the Global Biodiversity Forum for Eastern Europe takes note of the urgency of the issue of saiga conservation in the context of social and economic development of regions which cover natural habitat area of this species. The Session notes with concern the current status of this species in Russia, Mongolia and Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan and Turkmenistan (drastic decrease in the number of species and habitat area, high level of illegal and uncontrolled hunting, negative changes in the social and economic structure of these animals’ population). The Session requests the Governments of Russia, Mongolia, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan and Turkmenistan to sign the Memorandum of Understanding as soon as possible and to ensure early implementation of the Plan of Action on the issues of saiga conservation elaborated within the framework of the International Meeting on Saiga Protection (Elista, May 2002). | |||||
